When machinery alignment drifts and a building shows distress at the same time, the two symptoms are often treated as one problem. They are frequently two problems with a shared cause.

Establish whether movement is active

Survey control, crack monitoring, and alignment history over time separate a historic event from an ongoing mechanism. That distinction determines whether the correct response is repair, monitoring, or ground improvement.

Cracking tells you a structure moved. Instrumentation tells you whether it is still moving.

Subsurface conditions and water are usually involved

Changes in drainage, utility leakage, dewatering, adjacent construction, and seasonal moisture drive most industrial foundation movement. Geotechnical data must be reconciled with the timeline of observed distress.

Consequences for equipment

Rotating equipment is sensitive to millimetre scale change. A structural conclusion that ignores machinery consequences is incomplete for an operating facility.
